The story of the bronze serpent is one of the clearest pictures of the gospel in the Old Testament.
After Israel rebelled against God in the wilderness, the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people as judgment for their sin (Numbers 21). As many lay dying, God showed mercy by providing a way of salvation. He instructed Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it on a pole. Whoever looked to God's provision in faith would live.
The bronze serpent had no power in itself. It wasn't an idol or a source of healing. It simply pointed to God's promise. Those who trusted His word and looked were saved.
Centuries later, Jesus revealed that this event was about Him all along.
Speaking to Nicodemus, He said:
"As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life."

Just as Israel could not save themselves from the venom of the serpent, we cannot save ourselves from the guilt and penalty of sin. Our only hope is to look away from ourselves and trust the One whom God has lifted up—Jesus Christ. On the cross, Christ bore the judgment we deserved so that all who believe in Him would receive eternal life.
